Newark Insurance Company, formerly Newark Fire Insurance Company, started having difficulties as early as 1991 when they were heavily fined for improper implementation of workers’ compensation rules as well as for deficient rating and underwriting practices. In 1993 they withdrew from homeowners insurance in Texas, and in 1994 they withdrew from farm and ranch fire, farm owners, and ranch owners multi-peril, homeowners multi-peril, and personal fire and dwelling insurance.
In 1997, Royal Indemnity Company partially reinsured Newark Insurance. The next year in 1998 Newark added reinsurance on all of the lines for which they had direct basis authorization. However, in 2002 their certificate of authority was suspended in Colorado and Hawaii, and they were ordered to cease insurance writing practices in Texas.
The following year Newark’s certificate of authority was suspended in Alabama. In 2004 Newark deleted their accident, boiler and machinery, credit and livestock, fidelity and surety, glass, and health insurance products. By 2007, Newark was placed in rehabilitation and subsequently in liquidation in New Jersey.
Before Newark went into liquidation, they were licensed to write insurance products for air physical damage, aircraft liability, allied coverage, auto liability, auto physical damage, burglary and theft, employers’ liability, fire, forgery, inland marine, liability (other), ocean marine, reinsurance for all lines, and workers’ compensation liability.
