Here's what you need to know...

  • Geico and Nationwide are both large, well-known insurance companies
  • Geico focuses on internet interaction while Nationwide focuses on agent/customer interaction
  • Both companies have superior financial ratings
  • Nationwide performs better in customer satisfaction studies

Almost every vehicle owner in the United States needs to purchase auto insurance. That is because each state has mandatory car insurance laws. However, consumers have a lot of choices in which insurer they use.

If you are in the market for new auto insurance, you may have noticed advertisements for Geico and Nationwide.

You may wonder, is Geico better than nationwide? These are both popular insurers, so it might be a good idea to see how other customers have rated their experiences with both of these companies.

How are Nationwide and Geico Different?

Both of these major insurers have been doing business for a long time. Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company was founded in 1926. Geico was founded only a few years later, in 1936, but it was originally established to provide insurance to federal government employees.

Geico actually stands for The Government Employees Insurance Company, but Geico started selling to the general public in 1974.

Nationwide still pushes their network of local agents extensively. Geico tends to rely upon direct selling through the phone or internet, though consumers can find local agents in some areas.

The ability to access local agents might be one reason that some consumers are happier with their overall purchase experience with Nationwide. Some folks are still more comfortable using an agent than ordering insurance over the phone or the internet.

How do Geico and Nationwide Compare?

If you ever watch TV, you have probably heard that Nationwide is on your side. You may have also seen the cute little gecko that serves as a mascot for Geico.

Of course, you cannot figure out which insurer will be better for you by comparing an advertising jingle with a company mascot.

You might begin by comparing the financial strength of these two large insurers. A.M. Best is a company that measures the financial strength of insurance companies. Consider their rankings to help you see which company is considered stronger.

  • Geico credit rating: AAA
  • Nationwide credit rating: AA-
  • Geico financial strength: A++
  • Nationwide financial strength: A+

Both companies measure up very well. Geico does a little better, but they both beat out most American insurers when it comes to financial strength. Now that you know that either company is likely to have the financial reserves to serve their customers, you might turn to other measures.

J.D. Power is a large marketing research firm, and they conducted a customer claims satisfaction survey released in 2015. This study showed Geico receiving a 3 out of 5 and Nationwide receiving a 4 out of 5.

In a customer satisfaction study, also done by J.D. Power, Nationwide got a 4 out of 5 while Geico, again, received a 3 out of 5.

These averages might not predict your own experiences with either company. Lots of factors can affect your own experience. Some of these might be your local company representative, the type of vehicle you need to cover, the sort of damage you have, and much more.

Comparing Nationwide vs Geico Insurance By Price

Lots of vehicle owners shop for their policies based upon the premium. It is not possible to say which insurer will be cheaper for you without getting a personalized quote.

So many different factors go into rate calculations. These include your driving history, age, and the type of car you need to insure.
