Government versus Personal Vehicle

Dollarphotoclub_60994034-1600x1600

The idea of the government versus the personal vehicle is the first factor that comes into play for public official car insurance. While some public officials have no use of a government vehicle whatsoever, most of them do.

In some cases, these workers will drive personal cars to and from the office reserving the government vehicle only for duties performed during the workday.

For these workers, they’ll be using their personal vehicle for everything away from the office.

Other government workers, however, are allowed to take their government vehicles home at night. Whether policy permits it or not, this often leads to the government vehicle being used for personal use.

Either way, the public official is not driving his own personal vehicle as much as a non-government worker and is a lower risk to car insurance companies.

In a situation where the public official has 100% exclusive use of a government vehicle for personal and business needs, any insurance he or she might carry for a spouse’s car will be considerably less.

Public Officials and Caution

"Helpful tips" written on chalkboard

Part of what goes into risk assessment for a car insurance company is the likelihood to pay a claim.

Where public officials are concerned, it’s generally assumed that they are a bit more cautious in terms of both their driving and willingness to file a claim because they don’t want anything on their record that could be construed as negative.

In some cases, public officials will be more inclined to pay for a fender bender out of pocket rather than file a personal car insurance claim in order to keep the accident off their record.

There’s nothing illegal or immoral about such a decision, and it ends up actually being beneficial to both parties.

The thing to remember about insurance and accidents is the fact that any incident you encounter will be on your record regardless of the car you’re driving.

Who Covers the Cost

The final thing to consider when talking about public official car insurance rates is who is actually covering the cost of the premiums.

In cases where premiums are picked up by the government entity as part of the employee’s compensation package, rates could be lower due to the fact that the government entity is probably doing the same for other employees as well.

Like any other product, being able to buy in bulk provides a lower price overall.

In cases where the public official is purchasing his own insurance, he’s given the benefit of the doubt as a more responsible person because of the position he holds.
