Here's what you need to know...

  • There are many similarities between car insurance in the US and in Spain
  • Spanish car insurance will protect you through the European Union
  • Spanish car insurance companies offer additional coverage options that are worth looking into

If you are planning to relocate to Spain and you are taking your car, you will need to buy Spanish car insurance.

Planning is key when you are moving to a different country and, by getting the information you need in advance, you will be able to make the process run more smoothly.

Buying Spanish car insurance means that you also get a “green card” that extends your coverage to other EU countries.

For cars registered in the United Kingdom, a green card can be issued, but only for a limited time.

You would only be able to get one for 30 or 45 days, and there is an annual limit of 90 days that you would be covered under a UK-issued policy.

Spanish Car Insurance Coverage Available

Drivers in Spain are required to buy third-party coverage, which is the equivalent of bodily injury liability coverage in the United States.

While an individual can choose to buy only the minimum level of protection required by law, a better choice is to purchase a policy with a higher limit.

Consumers in Spain can also pay an extra €35 per year to get unlimited protection from their third party car insurance policy:

  • Third-party, fire, and theft coverages are also available to car insurance customers in Spain. This part of the policy protects against losses resulting from fire, theft, natural hazards, and broken glass
  • Another type of coverage available in Spain is comprehensive, or “all risk” coverage which protects the policyholder against the risks covered by third-party, fire and theft insurance, as well as other perils
  • Cars that are leased or financed must have comprehensive coverage in place. If an accident occurs, a Spanish car insurance company will usually not pay for a rental car while your car is being repaired
  • Driver and passenger insurance is optional coverage, and it can be added onto an existing policy. This is similar to the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage available in certain parts of the United States

Spanish Car Insurance Premiums

There are several factors that affect Spanish car insurance premiums. The type and level of coverage have a bearing on how much a driver will pay for car insurance coverage abroad.

Before buying a policy, take the time to think about exactly what you need in your car insurance policy.

The insurance company will also factor in the make and model of the vehicle to be insured when setting premium rates.

The number of miles driven annually is considered, as well as if the vehicle is being driven for business, pleasure or both.

  • Young or inexperienced drivers pay higher rates than people who are older or who have several years of driving experience under their belt. Some Spanish car insurance companies will refuse to cover drivers under the age of 25, and people aged 70 and up may also have trouble arranging coverage
  • Drivers who live in Madrid or other large cities will pay more for their insurance coverage than people living in rural areas. The reason city dwellers pay more for coverage is the same is in the United States; more cars on the road means a higher risk of being involved in an accident
  • Insurance companies in Spain will also consider whether you keep your car locked in a secure garage when setting rates. Doing so lowers your risk of having your vehicle stolen, which adds up to lower premiums

There are many similarities between Spanish car insurance and coverage available to people living in the United States.

Whether you are planning to move to a European country or not, you should still shop around for your car insurance coverage. It’s the best way to get the best possible rates for your coverage.
